Issues

From the outset, the Global AIDS Alliance has pursued a broad approach to addressing global AIDS.  Thus, in addition to promoting universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, and care—and encouraging governments and other stakeholders to commit the resources needed to scale up existing HIV programs—GAA seeks to address the root causes of the epidemic, including poverty, lack of access to education, weak health systems, gender inequity, and violence.  We believe this holistic, multisectoral approach is the best way to secure concrete results for people living with HIV/AIDS and at risk of HIV infection.

GAA's work encompasses the following major issues:

Stop HIV: ABC & Beyond
Promote a comprehensive, evidence-based HIV prevention strategy that empowers people to make informed decisions and protect themselves against HIV.

Treat the People
Ensure universal treatment access for all people with HIV/AIDS who need treatment, with a focus on increased treatment for women and expanded availability of pediatric ARVs.

Fund the Fight
Mobilize the financial resources needed to mount a comprehensive response to global HIV/AIDS, with a focus on ensuring a fair-share US contribution and full funding for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.

Protect the Children
Mobilize a comprehensive response to the growing crisis of orphans and vulnerable children, including children living with HIV/AIDS.

Free Basic Education
Ensure universal access to basic education and eliminate school fees that prevent millions of children from ever seeing the inside of a classroom.

Stop the Violence
Promote a multisectoral response to violence against women and children—a key driver and consequence of the HIV pandemic.

Strengthen Health Systems
Encourage efforts to strengthen basic health care infrastructure in poor countries hardest hit by HIV/AIDS and address the devastating shortage of health care workers.

End Poverty
Accelerate progress toward the Millennium Development Goals, with a focus on fighting HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases, and addressing the links between poverty and HIV.
