TAKE ACTION! Ask your members of Congress and their challengers in the upcoming US elections to sign the pledge.
Around the world, more than 33 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. Each day roughly 7,400 people are newly infected with HIV and nearly 5,500 people die of AIDS. Yet the US has not done enough to ensure that global AIDS programs are fully funded and that Congress continues to improve US global AIDS policies.
Here in the United States, the HIV infection rate has not fallen in 15 years, and over one million Americans are living with HIV/AIDS. In 2006, an estimated 56,300 new HIV infections occurred in the US, an increase of 40% over previous years. In addition, the epidemic continues to impact communities of color disproportionately. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half (49%) of Americans newly diagnosed with HIV infection in 2006 were black, although blacks comprise only 13% of the population. Yet, the US still lacks a coordinated national strategy to address HIV/AIDS.
That's why we are asking all candidates—Democrats and Republicans—to sign our Congressional Pledge.
Do your part by asking candidates in your area to sign the pledge!
