10 Good Reasons to Support GAA

1.  Every day roughly 7,400 people die of AIDS and nearly 5,500 are newly infected with HIV, most of them in poor countries that can't cope with the epidemic on their own. GAA holds decision-makers accountable for committing the resources needed to slow, and ultimately stop, this devastating epidemic.

2.  Treatment with antiretroviral (ARV) medications can keep people with HIV/AIDS alive for much longer. But in developing countries, less than a third of those who need these medicines are getting them. GAA is working to ensure that all people with HIV/AIDS have access to essential ARV treatment.

3.  At least 15 million children have been orphaned by AIDS, and nearly 1,000 children are infected with HIV each day—most of them through mother-to-child transmission. GAA is working to protect orphans and other vulnerable children, including children with HIV/AIDS.

4.  Increased government commitment is essential to securing long-term solutions to the global AIDS crisis. But securing that commitment will require pressure from an informed and energized American public. GAA empowers citizen activists like you to get involved in the fight against global HIV/AIDS.

5.  Girls are especially vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, accounting for nearly three-fourths of new HIV infections among young people in sub-Saharan Africa. GAA is working to eliminate government-imposed fees that prevent millions of girls from attending school—and to ensure that their schools are safe.

6.  Many of the poor countries hardest hit by the AIDS epidemic spend more repaying old loans from wealthy creditors than they do on health care for their own citizens. GAA is working to reduce and cancel foreign debt so developing countries can devote more of their own resources to HIV/AIDS programs and other essential health and education services.

7.  HIV/AIDS is erasing decades of health, economic, and social progress—reducing life expectancy, deepening poverty, and exacerbating food shortages. Indeed, experts agree that the epidemic poses a grave threat to political stability and global security. GAA works closely with organizations like the World Health Organization and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria to mobilize the leadership needed to avert this threat.

8.  There are at least 33 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. Some 7,400 die every day. GAA uses the facts to challenge those who are satisfied with incremental progress and promote prevention strategies based on proven public health practice, not ideology.

9.  GAA wages a multi-pronged attack on HIV/AIDS, bringing together credible policy analysis, hard-hitting media and public education, and targeted coalition-building and grassroots organizing. We work closely with diverse allies in the AIDS, health, and faith-based communities to demand responsible AIDS policy and achieve results in the face of overwhelming obstacles.

10.  In just a few short years, GAA has earned a well-deserved reputation for holding decision-makers accountable and empowering citizen activists like you to demand concrete action now. Your personal and financial investment will allow us to remain a powerful voice for change.
